While on a cross-country road trip, I visited my childhood town of Manhattan, KS - the "little" apple. I hadn't stepped foot there since I moved states away when I was 11 years old, over a decade ago. My home looked smaller, the trees looked larger, but the corner gutters looked just as big and scary.
My friend and I toured the old church we used to attend and there, in the children's nursery, I reconnected with a joyous past I'd almost forgotten - my play kitchen. My mom must have donated it to the church before we moved. The microwave door was missing and some of the sticker decals were worn, but it looked just as beautiful as it did the Christmas morning I first set eyes on it.
As a child, I loved pretending to cook baked goods in its oven, fry eggs on its stove, and reheat various dinners in its microwave, so everything was always served at the right temperature. I was never much of a dishes cleaner, even then, but the sink served well as a magical spigot that dispensed whatever drink I desired - orange juice, milk, lemonade. Assembling sandwiches was one of my favorite pastimes because of the endless combinations. It was the limitless creativity that captured me.
Seeing my play kitchen again and delighting in its sweet memories, I realized I had lost some of my joy in cooking. As a new wife, it had become more of a chore than a favorite pastime. I decided then to rediscover my love of creation in food preparation and thus this blog was born.
I hope you enjoy some of the recipes I share here; they are meant to be as enjoyable to make as to eat. Many are from the creative minds of others and I will try to provide sources as best I can. Thanks.
